The greatest threat amongst modern environmental problems is that of global warming. This term refers to the observed increases in the average temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans. Research and evidence indicates that in recent decades this phenomenon of global warming is due to the greenhouse effect caused by emission of green house gases (GHGs), mainly carbon dioxide. This excessive heating and subsequent increase in global temperatures causes many changes, including rise in sea level, changes in the amount and pattern of precipitation as well as the fear of species extinction. In recent times, the excess of GHGs emitted is because of the rise in production of power and energy for homes, offices and automobiles. In order to survive and flourish, it is necessary to find effective solutions for global warming.
Necessity of immediate solutions for global warming
The numerous problems that cause global warming includes overpopulation, deforestation, ozone depletion, garbage dumping and many others, all of which have far reaching consequences. Environmentalists offer unique solutions for these. The problem of the depletion of the ozone layer was attributed to emission of GHGs and the release of CFCs/chlorofluorocarbons, which had human activities as well as nature’s hand in it too. Melting icecaps in Antarctica were caused due to ozone destruction and this could be the situation for many other continents as well if proper measures to safeguard the protective ozone layer are not undertaken. Deforestation is killing the forest ecosystem and this is linked to many other problems as well, including species extinction to the loss of their habitat, erosion, flooding, desertification and decreased land productivity may also occur. These problems need immediate and effective solutions to nip this problem in the bud, in order to protect and preserve natural reserves and for all species to flourish on the planet.
Effective solutions for global warming problems
- Governments all over the world are creating awareness about this threat of global warming and implementing laws and treaties aimed at reducing the emission of pollutants that cause global warming.
- The need for certain policies to successfully reduce global warming has been addressed by national agencies and world health groups, which are based on raising fossil fuel prices (a deterrent for automobile drivers and users of energy from natural or oil gas power plants) and taxing emissions of green house gases.
- Encouraging people to take actions to promote the natural reserves and thoughtfulness towards the existing environment through activities such as planting trees and checking deforestation are helpful measures too.
- The problems and consequences of overpopulation have a solution in reducing family sizes and adopting family planning practices.
- The most effective solution for global warming is by increasing awareness about the greenhouse effect and educating people about issues of deforestation and climatic changes due to human activities that can be controlled. Environmental activists hope this will lead individuals and governments to act more responsibly towards the environment.
