It is necessary to first appreciate the definition of Global warming before reacting to its cause and effect. This phenomenon refers to the observed increases in the average temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans in recent decades. In the last century, there have been major climatic changes, and scientific opinions raise the heat on this topic. With a majority holding human activities responsible for global warming: increased volumes of carbon dioxide, other greenhouse gases (GHGs) released by the burning of fossil fuels, land clearing, agriculture, amongst other activities attributed as being the primary sources of the human-induced component of warming.
Overview of causes and effects of global warming
- An increase in global temperatures causes many changes, including rises in sea level, changes in the amount and pattern of precipitation. These changes effect global warming as they increase the possibilities for the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, such as floods, droughts, heat waves, hurricanes and tornados.
- Higher (or lower) agricultural yields, retreating of glaciers, the decrease in stream flows during summer months, possible elimination and extinction of species due to the excessive heat and difficult survival conditions are other effects. This species extinction can further be the likely cause for increase in the range of disease vectors. One of the largest factors contributing to global warming is the general problem of overpopulation and its many effects.
- Another cause and effect of global warming is the increased industrialization. This takes its toll on the energy sector for manufacturing to meet the demands for driving more cars and, in turn, creating increased amounts of garbage.
- A homely action such as using a refrigerator which releases dangerous gases or turning on lights requires energy from a power plant, and driving to work causes gas emissions from the car, all of which go a long way, even though in small doses, towards raising the levels of global warming.
- Rise in population in under-developed countries is causing a set back to the world enhancement standards as these Third World countries begin to use greater amounts of energy and the problem of global warming expands.
- Scientists compare the effects of global warming on climatic changes to the earliest situation of the earth: chaos, a perception brought about by the knowledge that the significant and constant rise in temperatures could cause some portion of the polar icecaps to melt, raising global sea levels. Probable results would be Islands disappearing and several thousand inhabitants having to relocate. Flooding could take place on coastlines, displacing people and ruining cropland.
The magnitude of these events connected to global warming is undergoing constant research for remediation as this phenomenon is expected to continue up to 2100 with prolonged rise in warming and subsequent sea level rise (due to thermal expansion). This is mainly because CO2 has a long average atmospheric lifetime and is expected to be a longstanding cause even then.
