How many myths and facts about global warning have you heard or read? Do you know about the predictions of new ice age? Logically, new ice age means colder temperature. Colder temperature means global warming is not going to happen. So, which one is true?
Through this article, we provide you with information about global warming myths and facts, especially around the issue of new ice age that contradicts global warming.
The structures of the article are as follows:
- Opinion
- The Facts
- Conclusion
Optimistically you will derive valuable information for you and your loved ones.
Opinion: Predictions about new ice age contradict global warming
Point to consider:
Back to the year 1970s, climate scientists predicted the approaching of ice age while nowadays, climate scientists say about global warming. This is a contradictory statement.
The Facts
- Ice age characterizes the Earth’s climate for the last two million years and lasting nearly to 100,000 years.
- In between these ice ages, a relatively short warm periods (10,000 to 30,000 years) or also known as interglacials had punctuated.
- Changes in the Earth’s orbit around the sun augmented by natural responses involving greenhouse gases was the cause of the shift from ice ages to warm periods.
- Around 10,000 years ago, the earth came into the newest interglacial age. Hence, there is a possibility the Earth will back into an ice age. Nevertheless, it will happen in the next 10,000 to 20,000 years ahead.
- During the nineteenth century, scientists recognized greenhouse gases as the contributor of higher temperatures. The increases of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere may lead to global warming within decades or centuries. This time scales are shorter than the fluctuation of ice ages and interglacials.
- In the 1950s, global temperatures unexpectedly declined. Therefore, some scientists raised another theory about global cooling or an imminent ice age.
- The advance of technology and knowledge revealed the cause of the declining temperature in the 1950s. Pollution from burning coal that produced tiny particles (aerosols) blocked the sun’s energy to the Earth.
- As time goes by, aerosol productions were controlled, but greenhouse gases emissions continued to increase. It means, the cooling effects from the aerosols were overcomed by the greenhouse gases. Therefore, global warming still continues.
Conclusion
Ice age is a natural phenomenon of the Earth. Nevertheless, it will not be happening in thousands of years. Hence, we still should put concern on the devastating effects of global warming in the following years.
Be active in preserving our environment and preventing global warming. Let’s make our world a better place for the entire people. Above all, let’s start from ourselves.
