Do you know how to separate myths and facts about global warming? If you do, do you have a strong reason to support your opinion?
Nowadays, there are so many arguments about the cause of global warming. One of the arguments is global warming is a natural phenomenon and it happens continuously every millenniums. From this argument, a question is raised, “Are human activities really the cause and therefore should responsible for global warming?”
Through this article, we provide you with information about myths and facts of global warming. This subject will be written in several series.
Optimistically, you will have a better understanding about global warming through this article.
We wish you a very happy learning!
Opinion: Global Warming is a Natural Phenomenon
Points to consider:
- Climate scientists are unable to prove their theory that global warming happens due to human interference.
- The current warming occurs as a part of natural processes.
Facts:
- Earth climate is a multifaceted system. Therefore, it is reasonable to argue that the natural processes also relates to the current warming.
- Apart from the greenhouse effect, there can be more than one cause that makes the warming of the Earth’s lower atmosphere. The other possible causes are internal variation within the climate system (e.g., heat transfer from one part the Earth to the atmosphere), higher absorption of the sun’s heat due to albedo (change within the planetary reflectivity of the Earth) and greater heat production from the sun.
- Although the earth temperature may increase from the sources that is written above, direct observations have confirmed that none of all the other possible causes are able to clarify the observed temperature over the last 50 years.
- In relation with internal variations, ocean would be the only possible part of the earth that preserve heat before it goes to the atmosphere. It means, the ocean should be the source of heat to the atmosphere. In the reality, according to several observations, the temperature in the ocean has increased in the past decades. This fact shows that the atmosphere already became a heat source to the ocean. Further studies revealed the positive correlation between the increasing temperature of the ocean with the increasing quantity of greenhouse gases.
- Based on the satellite observation in the early 60s until 80s, the Earth’s reflectivity has increased (makes cooler instead of warmer). Afterwards, the reflectivity decreased slightly. As added information, the overall warming temperature due to the decrease of the Earth’s reflectivity is relatively small compared to the effect of greenhouse gases.
- There is no significant change in production of heat (solar output) over the last twenty years (1980 to 2005) (After Lean and Froelich, 2006).
Conclusion
Directs studies and observations have eliminated all arguments about natural phenomenon as the cause of existing global warming. Greenhouse effect which is caused by human activities delivers the only quantifiable justification for the present warming trend.
Be active in preserving our environment and preventing global warming. Let’s make our world a better place for the entire people. Above all, let’s start from ourselves.
