If you wait too late, you may find it difficult to get all things in your hour of need. Or you may just forget few of the essential things that can keep you and your family safe. So, detailed planning is necessary days before a hurricane hits your town or city. Here is what you can do…
Emergency Supplies that you may need before a Hurricane
To survive a hurricane, you need WATER. Store enough water that can make you survive for at least 4 days. You can store at least five gallons of water for each of your family member.
The second thing that you need is stock your pantry with NONPERISHABLE FOOD items. These can be canned soups, powdered milk, dried fruits, meal replacement bars or shakes, nuts, peanut butter, ready-to-eat cereal, soda, etc.
In case you have a baby in your family, you need enough baby food, diapers and other supplies to last you through the hurricane.
A well-stocked first aid kit and manual can keep you protected from infection and wounds.
Power cut is a common occurrence when a hurricane hits. Be ready for a complete blackout for at least a week. For this, you can keep flashlights, a battery-operated radio (to keep abreast with the latest hurricane bulletins) and extra batteries in stock.
During hurricane, water gets contaminated. So, stock yourself with enough chlorine or iodine tablets or household chlorine bleach to purify the contaminated water.
You will also need prescription medicines or medicines for general cuts or abrasions or in case of emergencies.
You can also store personal hygiene products such as sanitary napkins, toothpaste, soaps, etc for washing and cleaning purpose.
Among miscellaneous items, you can keep maps, fire extinguisher, knives, tapes and sleeping bags with you. A detailed map can help you to devise ways of escape in case one of the routes is blocked. Knives and tapes protect your windows and doors from damage. A chain saw can be very handy for cutting fallen trees that have blocked roads.
