Green Fuel May Fuel Global Warming

Posted on August 6, 2008 in Latest News

Have you ever seen any incident where a solution complicated the problem more, rather solving it? In some cases it happens. But, can you believe it happened in the case of global warming, a giant problem for the planet in coming years? Practically, the biofuel which has been using as a substitute fuel for conventional petroleum resources worsening the global warming.

Hazardous Cultivation:
Most crops grown in Europe and North America to produce a ‘green’ alternative transport fuel are actually accelerating the global warming, reveals a report by Dutch atmospheric chemist Paul Crutzen. The industrial farming methods to produce good yield are creating the crisis. The study on alternative fuel derived from Rapeseed, used in Europe, indicates that it could produce up to 70 percent more greenhouse gases than conventional diesel.

Report suggests:
The report suggests the farmers and scientists to focus on crops needing little fertilizer and harvesting methods that are least energy intensive in order to provide benefits for the atmosphere. Biofuels are yielded from the plants that absorb the globe-warming greenhouse gas carbon dioxide as they grow, and so are meant as an eco-friendly substitute for conventional fossil fuels.

Nitrous Oxide - Threat to Environment:
But, the report informs that some biofuels release more greenhouse gases than they absorb, due to the fertilizers and chemicals used in modern farming practices. The plants which are grown to produce the biofuel, release the nitrous oxide, the hazardous greenhouse gas which is about 300 times more harmful to the environment than the most common human-made greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.

Rapeseed - making the crisis:
The study initiates and increases doubts on the credibility of green fuels as an eco-friendly fuel resource. Nitrous oxide’s content releasing from the biofuels alone, slashing the whole environmental benefits provided by them. The study estimated that using biofuel produced from rapeseed would leave between 1 and 1.7 times more greenhouse gas out into the atmosphere than the conventional diesel.

The Report Highlights:

This is the time to think again on using biofuel as an alternative transport fuel. To judge the credibility of the biofuels, need more studies. The conventional agricultural methods are the best techniques to provide climate friendly biofuel. Scientists suggested farmers to revive the modern agricultural practices and to use most conventional harvesting procedures.
