Global warming – has become a frequently used word in this decade. Did you know that apart from causing lung, skin and kidney disorders, how global warming may affect your health? Experts say, cardiac system is more prone to the global warming effects and can be affected badly.
Scientists said that cardiac system is another human system that may get affected by global warming. But, some scientists found that global warming may prevent heart attacks. In order to reduce the confusion, it is better to analyze both the negative and positive impacts of global warming on heart.
Global Warming: What is Bad for Heart:
Doctors warn that warmer weather predicted with global warming may also produce more heart problems.
- Dr. Karin Schenck-Gustafsson, of the department of cardiology at Karolinska Institute, Sweden, says, “if temperature rises few degrees in the next 50 years, we will definitely suffer from more cardiovascular diseases.” Cardiology experts said that the issue needs more attention as it is well-known that people will suffer most from heart disorders when the climate is hot.
- European Heat Wave – 2003:
In 2003, during the European heat wave, nearly 35,000 were estimated in the first two weeks of August. Nearly 15,000 people died in France alone due to soar warmth. Experts defined that much of that were because of heart disorders that are worsened by the extreme hot.
- Global Warming causes Atherosclerosis:
Dr. Gordon Tomaselli, of American Heart Association, says, “the hardening of the heart’s arteries is like rust developing on a vehicle. Rust develops much more rapidly at warmer temperatures, and can cause atherosclerosis”.
- Greek Forest fires in 2007:
Extreme incidents like damaging fires in Greece last year may complicate the problem. Experts say that increased forest fires in Southeast Asia in last decade have also worsened the situation of heart problems.
- Scientific Uncertainties about Global Warming:
Due to the scientific uncertainties about global warming, doctors are in a dilemma about what exactly to prescribe. No definite prediction has made by the scientists about how fast the climate change will occur and what other factors such as pollution or natural phenomena can affect it.
- Role of Pollution in Global Warming:
Doctors also considered the pollution as a main cause of global warming which speeds up the global warming. In their view, the small airborne contaminants can irritate the lungs which can simulataneously harm the heart very badly.
- Higher temperatures - Human Tolerance:
Still, rising temperatures are not bad for everyone. Warmer climate may encourage some people to exercise more and improve their health. Usually, human is not designed to tackle the higher temperatures but, some experts predict that human beings might develop some sort of biological path to tolerate the heat in a better manner.
Global Warming - What is Good for Heart:
some experts identified a significant negative association between the daily average temperature and cardiac mortality among persons over the age of 55 years. An increase of 5 Degrees Celsius in temperature was associated with a decrease in death rate by a factor of 0.97.
The experts also say, the cold temperatures may be an important triggering factor to bring the life-threatening cardiac incidents. Cold exposure may affect the cardiac health in aged people.
