Causes of Global Warming

Global Warming is mostly a result of human activities. Human beings are so engrossed in progressing materialistically that they fail to notice the impact of industrialization and material progression on the environmental conditions. We think we are too tiny a part of this environment to make a difference, this way we continue to do our bit to take global warming, a step further.
We don’t even realize that signs of our progression are eventually turning out to be signs of our destruction. Here, have a look –
Carbon Dioxide Emission from Power Plants
It was recorded in the year 2002 that 40% of the US carbon-di-oxide emissions are from the burning of fossil fuels for the purpose of electricity generation. Four months of electricity from coal-fired generation consumes a metric ton of carbon from coal. Coal emits 1.25 times more carbon than oil emits. So next time you leave home with the lights on, remember that you are contributing to this disaster called Global warming.
Carbon-Di-Oxide emissions from Cars
The United States is the largest consumer of oil, using 20.4 million barrels per day. Around 33% of the US carbon dioxide emissions result from the internal combustion of gasoline in cars and other automobiles. When you are out to buy a car, fuel efficiency is the last thing you think about but vehicles with poor gas mileage contribute most to global warming. If you are one of those who want to show off driving a sports car to work, thing again. According to the E.P.A’s 2000 Fuel Economy Guide, a new Dodge Durango sports utility vehicle (with a 5.9 liter engine) that gets 12 miles per gallon in the city will emit an estimated 800 pounds of carbon dioxide over a distance of 500 city miles. In other words for each gallon of gas a vehicle consumes, 19.6 pounds of carbon dioxide are emitted into the air. A new Honda Insight that gets 61 miles to the gallon will only emit about 161 pounds of carbon dioxide over the same distance of 500 city miles. Sports utility vehicles were built for rough terrain, off road driving in mountains and deserts. When they are used for city driving, they are so much overkill to the environment.
Deforestation
Deforestation is the second principle cause of Global warming after carbon dioxide emissions. Deforestation is responsible for about 25% of all carbon emissions entering te atmosphere. The destruction of tropical forests throws hundreds of millions of tons of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere every year.
Traffic Jams
Disregard for traffic rules is also contributing to global warming. Drivers in posh cities like New York and Los Angeles alone waste 600 millions of gallons of gas every year and emit 7.5 million tons of carbon. Next time you raise your car in a traffic jam, think about how much you would be contributing to Global warming.
