There has been a strong debate on concrete linking between global warming and spread of infectious disease. Many scientists have strongly emphasized the fact that global warming will cause spread of many infectious diseases and epidemics even in such countries which never experienced the consequences before. On the other hand many scientists have given vague reports on this issue.
Paul R. Epstein, associate director of the ‘Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard Medical School, in a debate before an Institute of Medicine Panel on Global Health which held recently, said that a number of infectious diseases spread by mosquitoes, rats and water are directly linked to global warming.
Scientists report that with the increase of temperatures, even diseases caused by contamination of drinking water and food-poisoning will increase dramatically.
On the basis of BBC reports WHO believe diseases like encephalitis and malaria will spread at a greater space throughout Europe as the temperatures continue to increase.
What is the current situation in regarding to spread of diseases due to global warming?
- With a greater space malaria is climbing the mountains to reach countries situated in higher elevations of Africa and Latin America.
- Cholera is spreading in warmer seas.
- Lyme disease and Dengue fever are moving to north.
- Encephalitis never seen in U.S before seven years has infected more than 21,000 and killed more than 800 people in United States and Canada.
It is said that the spread of diseases due to global warming will drastically affect the developing world. Death rate will rise dramatically in poorer nations due to lack of proper medical and sanitary facilities. The consequences of global warming will affect health as well as economic growth too.
