Role of nuclear emissions in Global Warming is a source of major debate today. There are various environmentalists who argue that Nuclear energy is harmful for the environment. They believe that
- The mining and processing of uranium for nuclear fuel harms the environment.
- Nuclear power units are major areas of target by the Terrorist Organizations. This could lead fuel to fall into wrong hands.
- A major accident at the nuclear power could not only kill thousands of people, it could affect the environment and could also render thousands of acres uninhabitable.
- Solar, wind and geothermal power according to environmentalists have tremendous potential, and none of the risks of nuclear power.
- Nuclear power has lingering problems, most notably the lack of a permanent repository - anywhere in the world - for long-lived, highly radioactive waste.
On the other hand there are certain experts who believe that Nuclear energy is extremely important to run the world. The points they use to support their argument are as follows
- Nuclear power plants emit no green house gases, which according to advocates makes them a great replacement.
- Coal-fired power plants that generate country’s daily electricity emit carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. Nuclear power is used to produce 17% of the world’s electricity. It is considered to be a safer option as it produces no Green house gas.
- Wind and solar are considered to be intermittent energy providers. This is not enough. Today’s industries need large concentrated energy production sources.
The role of Nuclear Power in Global Warming is still not decided. Controversies and debates keep arising. There is no hard core evidence For or Against the topic.
